National Center on Scaling Up Effective Schools

The Study

The National Study on Scaling Up Effective Schools (NCSU) is a seven-year research-practice partnership with two large, urban districts. The goal of the study was to support and study the design and implementation of a student ownership reform innovation. The grant established a networked improvement community consisting of district, school, and teacher-leaders, external program developers, and researchers who worked together to create, implement, scale, and sustain the innovation. 

Role Responsibilities
Graduate Research Assistant | Summer 2015-Summer 2017

Data Collection

  • Collected interview data during multiple fieldwork trips as well as via phone, interviewing teachers, administrators, district officials, and program developers. 
  • Supported data collection management of audio files, artifacts, and post-interview memos.
  • Co-created and implemented two social network survey instruments. 
  • Assisted in drafting interview protocol.

Data Synthesis

  • Coded transcribed audio interviews for three waves of data collection.
  • Synthesized major themes from audio collected from stakeholder meetings and activities.
  • Processed data from individual codes into analytic memos organized by school, stakeholder, and sub-themes.

Data Analysis and Dissemination

  • Co-author on four qualitative or mixed-methods working papers using NCSU data. 
  • Presented findings at 6 peer-reviewed conferences and supported the preparation of study findings at 4 peer-reviewed conferences.
  • Supported writing memos to partner districts on research findings from each field visit.
